LOCATION: WORLDWIDE (HEAD OFFICE IN AUSTRALIA)
Brief: Come up with a design solution to engage staff in a workplace safe campaign. While I was contracted at Thiess’ head office last year they asked me to come up with some creative ways to get staff on site at their mines thinking about where their hands were when using machinery. Their workplace safety campaign already had an ask to staff: ‘remember the p.i.n.c.h points’ - they just needed to visually reinforce this message.
Approach: Instead of just plastering boring safety posters around the yard that nobody wanted to read I created a pack of cards that staff could use on their breaks. I was drawn to the word “pinch” and the creative just kind of flowed after that. Working with the communications team we started to have a bit of fun in the wording too:
“ Don’t be a joker, remember the p.i.n.c.h points”
“A pinch and a punch for the first day of the month…”
Design specs: As part of the campaign I made pocket cards, signs and powerpoint slides that the site managers could also utilise in meetings. The sings and slides adopted the playful tone of the pocket cards, which was a small intervention to keep staff engaged in the topic.
Success: This campaign was originally rolled out only in Australia, but it received such positive feedback that it has now been translated and used by Thiess at their sites in Chile and Canada as well.
